Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on August 24 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay instantly fell in love with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to engage people. DuVernay had her mother who was socially aware and taught her to utilize the arts as a means of expressing herself. Even though DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her parents, she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer and was motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was still in the college. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
