Curtis is the daughter of Carmencita Ojales, a Filipina originally from Bolinao Pangasinan, and James Ernest Curtis Smith who was an Australian attorney. Her birthplace was Yarrawonga within Victoria, Australia. Her father was married to Ojales on the 29th of October, 1982. The younger sister Jasmine is also an actor. They both have fathers. had a half-sister named Clare who passed away in the year 2007 from a heart illness at the age of four months.
